Cashing It All In

Remember our good friend and inspiration for this diaryland site name, Johnny Cash? Well, it appears it is time to pay him yet another well-earned tribute.

Not only was it his birthday on February 26 (he turned the big 7-0 that dayway to go, Johnny!) but it just seems like lately, The Man in Black has been hovering a lot more than usual.

First, there was his new song, Hurt which is at once frightening yet compelling. I am still waiting for an analysis of the message of the song/video from Bevin. I think she is too engrossed in illegally downloading versions of The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face (apparently once recorded by our own JCwho knew?) (and by the way, you can read all about it here) to commit to breaking it down for me. But I will wait patiently. Meanwhile, I will watch the video on CMT sometimes and just sit and watch in wonder and appalled sadness that Johnny could be so remorseful of his life and also so violent. Eek. No wonder he went to Folsom Prison for a time.

Then there was my sister and her two roommates who suddenly found themselves the proud parents of a baby squirrel who squirreled his way into their house one day. After ensuring that they would not contract rabies from the cute little rodent, they fashioned a comfortable home for him out of a box and Lindsay promptly named him Johnny Cashew. On his box, she painted bars and the words Folsom State Prison. He is a happy, happy squirrel. Soon, Johnny Cashew will be out on parole and will be given to a wildlife center to live in. Im sure he will always remember his days in the prison, though, and those forlorn sounds of the train whistle ablowin.

Lastly, today I checked Diannas diary and lo and behold, in her boredom at work she composed a set of alternate lyrics to Folsom Prison Blues entitled Cubicle Blues. They really are quite witty and you can read them and sing along by clicking here . Apparently, the carrier man has tickled Diannas creativity bone yet again. We should all be so lucky.

Oh Johnny. Our fascination and wonderment of you never ends.

Maybe, if I have a boy, Ill name him Sue.
